Red Island Beach in Banyuwangi, East Java, is a popular surfing spot thanks to its spectacular waves. It is also a place of natural beauty.

The setting sun at Red Island Beach is reflected by the
water and stretches out with a warm glow. It tinges the sand and a small hill just off the coast on this balmy afternoon.

"That is why it's called Red Island Beach," says Rakih, a local surf instructor and fisherman.

Located in Sumber Agung village in Pesanggaran district, the beach has golden sands stretching 3 kilometers. Visitors can engage in activities such as surfing and snorkeling.

Two lifeguards are on duty every day and locals like Rakih can provide advice on safe locations at which to surf. They usually offer surfing lessons for beginners and rent out surfboards for Rp 30,000 (US$3) per day.

Four rental cottages are available, but local residents also offer accommodation at their homes for Rp 100,000 to Rp 150,000 per room per day.

While several stalls along the beach sell snacks and drinks, it is also possible to ask locals to cook authentic local meals, but this would mean buying all the ingredients in the city first.

Free Wi-Fi is also available, thanks to the local administration’s effort to provide more facilities for tourists.

The best waves for surfing are said to occur from May to July. In fact, an international surfing competition is slated to be held at Red Island Beach in May.

How to get there
- The beach is situated about 70 kilometers from the southern part of Banyuwangi. Traveling time from the city is around 1.5 hours. The road is surfaced and the view from the road is predominantly paddy fields.

- Another option is to go there from Bali, but it's preferable to use Surabaya as a starting point since there are direct flights available from the city to Banyuwangi.

- The beach is 48 kilometers from Blimbingsari Airport in Banyuwangi. It's advisable to reserve a rental car to pick you up at the airport before flying from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. Rentals are about Rp 250,000 without fuel, while the driver's fee is negotiable.
